One of the most important tasks of a flight attendant is to guarantee safety on board and to take care of the passengers (which includes showing the correct behaviour in the case of a fall in air pressure or the use of life jackets). In an emergency the flight attendant must immediately take the right action and ensure that the plane is evacuated as fast as possible.

The highest ranking flight attendant, the purser, is responsible for the coordination of safety and emergency measures given in the airline information manual for the passenger cabin. At the same time he is also the link between the cabin crew and the cockpit crew.

The flight attendant represents the airline and thus makes a considerable contribution towards forming its public image through extensive contact with passengers. For this reason most airlines attach great importance to the training and appearance of their flight attendants. We can regard the flight attendant as an “ambassador” of the country where the airline is based. This explains why the style of the uniform often expresses the country’s typical traditions.

In a basic course lasting several weeks flight attendants are given theoretical and practical training. The knowledge conveyed is based on criteria that are economically relevant for the airline. The training ends with an internal non-state-recognized examination. Each airline trains its own cabin personnel. Even when someone with several years’ experience is recruited the basic training is carried out in full.

If you decide in favour of a career as a flight attendant, you will be rewarded with an exciting job that not only provides the opportunity to meet people from many different countries but also to get to know foreign countries and other cultures.
